LINEAGE SOCIETIES

Are you interested in joining DAR, SAR, UEL, Mayflower, Huguenot, DUP, or other societies?  If so, I'll help you with the entire application process.

Most lineage societies have been around since the late 1800s and were formed to celebrate ancestors involved in pivotal events of our nation's history.

If you qualify, this is your chance to become a member of a very special cadre that allows you to embrace and connect to these people and events in a very unique and memorable way.

What They Do

Most of these societies do a great deal of charity work.  DUP, for example, raises money to repair or replace Utah's pioneer tombstones.

What a wonderful way to honor the achievements of your ancestors than to give back to your community via an organization dedicated in their honor.

They also do an enormous amount of historical preservation work.  SAR, for instance, was the driving force behind the creation of the National Archives here in America.

DAR and SAR also maintain wonderful genealogy libraries.

They also show their patriotism by making civic duty appearances, such as Color Guards and parades.

Most importantly, they teach you about the lives of your ancestors in a way you just can't get from only a book.  A perfect example of this is via their sponsoring and running of various historical live re-enactments.

Their museums and other historical sites also give you an intimate look at the lives your ancestors typically led and are a fabulous way to experience their lives far beyond just the "names, dates, and places" only basic genealogy gives you.

And remember, it's not just history, it's your family history, which is far more fulfilling.

Let's look at a few of the most popular societies.

Revolutionary War

Are you proud of your Revolutionary War ancestors?

Then you can join the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) or Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) for your patriot fighters, or the United Empire Loyalists (UEL) for your Tory ones.

Mayflower

How about those brave souls who braved treacherous seas for months on end to land on the unknown shores of Massachusetts in 1620?

Then you can join the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Huguenot

Or how about those unfortunate Protestants forced to flee out of France upon the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685?

Others

There are also many lessor known organizations, such as Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) and Sons of Utah Pioneers (SUP), here in Utah that celebrate those hearty migrants who trekked across the country, mostly on foot, pulling a heavy handcart over freezing mountain passes, just to find religious freedom.

And there are many others at the local, county, state, and national levels, too, for just about any historical event you can think of.  You're certainly not without options.

How It Works

The qualification criteria are pretty much the same, no matter where or who you apply with.

Basically, you just have to prove your descent from your "gateway" ancestor that would qualify you as a member.

But sometimes that's easier said than done.

How Can I Help?

In the olden days, these societies tended to be quite lax on their admittance verifications, but no longer.  In many ways, they've almost become too strict.

As a result, there are a lot of hoops to jump through and documents to get, and the scrutiny of those documents have gone through the roof.

But don't let that discourage you.  I'll do my very best to help you get all of the documents you need and get your application prepped and ready for submission.

I'll also be there should they rebut with questions or require further documentation.

It can be a tedious procedure at times, but together we can navigate the perils and make it to smooth waters.
